I use a two-part modelling clay called Milliput that dries rock hard in around three hours (and is available from any craft stores for around £3). When customising, I recommend using reference material, a fantastic range of paints from GamesWorkshop (that cost £2 a pot) and A LOT of patience! Good Luck!
